Finishing the pig

Post by eskinner45 » Tue Jul 25, 2017 1:14 pm

We have a barrow who is weighing around 265 and I'd say he's probably just about rightfor fair except we are still 15 days out. I'm afraid if I feed him to much he'll end up getting way to fat and paylean I think will tighten him up. If I try to cut him way down I think he's going to lose his full appearance I don't know I'm not extremely experienced with holding pigs like this. Te only thing he maybe could use is to fill out his gut skittle more and some rib shape but his back fat seems to be just right. What would you guys recommend doing? Also from what I understand they want that cover on those pigs to look hard not really flabby is that correct? If so he may be getting a little to fat around his hams he seems to have quite a bit there what would you guys recommend for that? Any advice is good advice to me!

Thanks!

Per feeding (twice daily):

1 pound base feed (17-18%, 5% fat)
1 pound Essential Cruise Control - hold weight while adding rib
1/2 pound Essential Cool Bloom 44 - help add shape & tone

This diet will result in 1 pound of gain daily. So, you should be able to weigh him in around 280 or under with no problem depending on where you want him, and he will still be full and fresh.

Or,
2 lbs Powerfill
2 lbs base feed
8 oz Depth Charge

Gain about 0.5 lbs per day and look great.

9 days to weigh in

Post by Kat70 » Thu Jul 27, 2017 10:53 am

Help! I am in a similar situation. Weigh in for fair is in 9 days and my son's barrow weighed 265 last night and he had gained 2.5 pounds per day in 4 days. Max weight is 285. Wondering how to hold weight while still building muscle. I haven't actually weighed the feed but using the shorter measuring cup.
Twice daily he gets soaked:
1 lb 18% showrite,
3/4 lb (full measuring cup)moorbody,
1/4. Lb oat groats,
2 oz moorfat
9g/ton paylean.

We also have a gilt that is 245 and is on same feed. She could still use more muscle but definitely needs more through ribs. This is only or 2nd year in pigs so we don't have much experience. I also have a small amount of purina 16% (709?)

Thank you in advance!

That's supposed to say Showtec measuring cup. Also, I was wondering if there is a recommendation with the feed I already have.
