Water and Diarrhea at show

Post by mhartline » Mon Aug 14, 2017 8:42 am

Can pigs get diarrhea once they get to the show by drinking a different water source? If so what are some suggestions on preventing this from happening?

Thanks in advance.

Pigs get loose stools at a show because they have been given too much feed and water too quickly.

How do you recommend introducing feed and water at a show to avoid this problem?

If it's a terminal show I would not worry about it. It usually clears up by the end of the week and sale day.

But, the pig is scouting while it's being shown. Not a good look. Just slowly fill the pig. A drink then some feed (1/2 lb to start). Then a little more each time you feed. If you have the time between weigh in and showing feed about every 2 hours the first day.

Thanks KGB. Our fair has automatic waterers so should I consider blocking it off and feed them water from their hanging feeders? I have been wet feeding with the goal of bringing water from home to add to feed (with electrolytes).

I guess you could. But the bigger problem is too much feed too fast.

Yes, this happens all the time at our state fair and county fair. The fair water is usually high in chlorine which can affect the hogs if they are not used to it. We always bring our watering devices in and we purchase a chlorinator from sullivans so this does not happen. Definitely do not want the hogs to scour. I cover the automatic waterers that the fair has so that they can not get to it.

I don't feed city water until after the sale. I always bring water from the same hydrant I water from at home and slowly begin mixing well with city and then get them onto city water slowly. I don't like city water myself and that makes me think why I would feed it to my pigs. I have only showed at the local county fair, but I know that people who travel for shows can't always bring water.

We always use a water filter. Just an RV water filter ($30) and rarely have any problems.
