Re: Paylean
The norm should be 0gm. Don't use it unless you are experienced with it or have someone helping you that is. If your pigs are stress positive don't use it. If your pig has enough muscle don't use it. Judges are going for softer pigs now anyway. I would just avoid it if at all possible. I'm hoping that is the next thing banned from showpigs. I have seen more and more 4hers ruin their pigs with it. Just my opinion.
Re: Paylean
While that may be true. It's education that will help the most not merely banning something because
1) some people don't know how to use it properly
2) some people select terrible pigs that are structurally unsound
3) some people refuse to get help and information
The majority of Showpig feeders have learned how to use it and do a responsible job. And more importantly usually do not blame Paylean or feed or supplements for their lack of success on a particular pig.
If it ruined every pig every time, then I'd agree with you. But, banning something for the use by everyine because of the lack of knowledge by a few is not a great thing.
Paylean does these things:
1. Increases muscle
2. Increases growth rate
3. Decreases body fat (unless additional energy ... calories is not added to the diet)
4. Decreases feed intake
These pigs should not be fed Paylean:
1. Unsound pigs
2. Pigs that are positive for the stress gene
3. Heavily muscled pigs that have little body fat
Legal parameters:
- minimum weight of 150 lbs
- for the final 45-90 lbs of weight gain
- a feed with at least 16% protein
- 0 to 9 grams/ton concentration. (NOT 9 grams per day)
- NO feed withdrawal period required
