KGB how much PowerFuel to Use

Post by ElmerFudd » Fri Aug 18, 2017 1:32 pm

My daughter is down to her last 19 days until the Fair weigh in. She is showing Durocs. Her barrow is looking good and was at 225 6 days ago and should be up around 265-270 with ADG around 2lbs. The Gilt, however, needs more body and was at 245 a week ago. They are eating an 18% ground feed 5.5lbs each per day. The breeder recommends adding a pound of fat to the gilt's feed to give her more body. I can't get Heavyweight in time but I do have some Power Fuel. The max limit is at 320 but I would like to keep her just shy of 300 if possible. So the 19 days plus the 6 days since last week allows me about ADG of 2.2. What would you suggest the amount of feed to Powerfuel?

Thx

When your breeder said to add "a pound of fat" per day, did he specify what that would be? Fat isn't fat. For example Heavy Weight is 70% fat and Power Fuel is 31% fat. A big difference.

Also I just want to make sure (so that I give you the advice that will help you), there is a big difference between body and fat cover. To me body is fill and the products for that are Depth Charge (mid level fill for rib) and Ultra Full (lower level fill for flank and lower third).

Adding fat to the gilt's diet is going to help increase fat cover and increase growth rate. So, to give you the right advice could you help me by providing the answers to a couple questions:

1. Is it more fat cover that you are after?
2. What was the gilt gaining per day on the feed you are feeding?

(Total daily feed; divide into 2 equal meals):
High Octane Powerfill. 2 1/2 lbs
High Octane Power Fuel. 2 lb
High Octane Depth Charge. 8 oz

Start Power Fuel at 8 oz per day and increase by 4 oz about every 2-3 days until you are feeding 2 lb per day.
