KGB ? on rate of gain with feed mix
KGB ? on rate of gain with feed mix
My daughter's hog has 21 days till the State Fair and her cross has been held for quit some time and lost all of his rib he is flat as a board. wright how he is on 3 pounds of Moormans 14.5 it has 6% fat with .75% lysine and 2 pounds of Linders 611 23% protein 7.1% fat and 1.42 % lysine, and he is getting 8 oz of Sumo. Plus I have added 2 pound of death Charge and one pound of Ultra Full. I am not sure what he should gain on this ration because I can't get a good weight on him due to him drinking three gallons of water per feeding. the last weight I got he was 228 pounds and the max weight at the Fair is 290. any help will be appreciated. this is a one day feeding.
Re: KGB ? on rate of gain with feed mix
That is a lot of feed and water for once per day feeding.
Are you really getting the pig to eat all of that feed, and 2 lbs of Depth Charge per day?
Just some observations:
1. the pig can gain 2.95 lbs/day (290 - 228) / 21 days = 2.953 lbs/day
2. Don't be surprised if the pig doesn't gain that and more. It's called compensatory gain where when pigs don't gain because of the diet, when put back on basically full feed they gain much, much faster and usually gain back everything they should have and then some.
3. you would be better off feeding twice per day
4. is the pig really eating all that feed, all that water, and 2 lbs per day Depth Charge? That is a lot of Depth Charge
5. Depth Charge is much better fed dry, the same with Ultra Full
6. If the pig has been held for a long time and is flat sided, it probably lost a good bit of muscle and freshness as well.

Re: KGB ? on rate of gain with feed mix
The ration is broke into two feeding per day so no he is not eating that much twice a day. I do wet feed him but he runs to the tube water and he will drain the tube, even with the feed wet. I guess I will have to pull his water while he is eating and start feeding him dry. how much Ultra Full and Depth Charge would you give him to blow his ribs out and give him more body.
Re: KGB ? on rate of gain with feed mix
Sorry, I didn't mean you were feeding that twice per day. The way it read it sounded like you were only feeding once per day. (All of that only one time during the day).
One pound of Depth Charge should do it. It really depends how much help the pig needs. He could need 2 lbs it depends upon the pig. The same thing goes with Ultra Full. If he's really tucked up in his flank it might take 2-3 lb per day. Usually pigs needing moderate help need about 1 lb per day.
