Heavy Weight question

Post by Rudewick » Mon Oct 02, 2017 12:38 pm

I am a relative newbie at the showpig game. Daughter showed last year, we leased a gilt that would not eat pretty much the whole time we had her. Just put 2 pigs in the barn yesterday, one spot barrow and one chester barrow. Feeding Moormans 18241, both pigs are around 45-50 lbs. My question is, can I go ahead and add a supplement like heavy fuel to help increase appetite, or wait? And when would i add something like oats/showts?

You could do that...but you would be possibly adding fat cover too soon.

We use a product called Liquid Boost by Vita Ferm and Sure Champ pellets. Both these products are designed to keep appetite up and they work! Liquid Boost is just a squirt in the mouth or top dressed over feed, really easy to use.

Since you have 2 pigs together you also have that working for you. They should compete for feed, etc.

Also do some research on limit and hand feeding (including wet feeding) to make sure you have your pigs always chomping at the bit. There is a ton of information on here about that subject. Check out the post from KGB specifically.

If the pigs put on fat at this weight depends upon 2 things:
1. genetic programming - if the pigs are heavy muscled, and late maturing, they won't put on much fat
2. how much Heavy Weight you feed, you don't have to feed 8 to 12 oz per day to help appetite. Feed 2 oz per day.

Mix the Heavy Weight with enough water to make a milk shake like consistency and then add to the feed.
