Feeding fat
Feeding fat
What is everyone's thoughts on the cheapest most effective form of fat to feed pigs?
Re: Feeding fat
Milk replacer works well, but it isn't as high a percentage of fat as the show brands.
We have been using the hi fat feeds from moorman's and the showtec 3-D oil. It is really easy to feed and seems to go a ways in terms of volume. It also helps with skin and hair really well.
When it comes to cover and condition it pays to do it correctly. Remember that it takes 30-40 days to see the result of a high fat diet.

Re: Feeding fat
I think that 30-40 days depends on many factors:
- how much fat per day you are feeding
- what the energy (calorie) content is in the base feed
- genetic programming
- how old the pigs are (where they are in their growth curve). Late maturing pigs will take much longer especially if it’s esrly in the growth curve
That 30-40 days depends upon a number of factors (might be less than 30 days or way more than 40 days)

Re: Feeding fat
In terms of pure cost soybean oil (vegetable oil) is probably the cheapest. It is 100% fat and you can buy a gallon at WalMart for something like $5. Just be careful, it is easy to go too much too fast and they will get pretty loose on you. Also remember that there is a threshold where once they go past that point of added fat that their feed consumption will start to decrease.
Re: Feeding fat
I have a question concerning a similar topic. I am looking at adding some fat into the diet of our 2 pigs. I am not wanting to add a lot of cover at this point. I have looked into using one of the Supplements (Sumo or Heavy Weight) or Rice Bran Oil. I have read here Rice bran oil is good for the pigs beyond a fat source. Is there an advantage to buying a Supplement over using a pure Oil. Does the supplement provide additional benefits?
Re: Feeding fat
I am not exactly sure about rice bran oil, but we use the Moorman's Alliance 3-D oil with great success. I think the oil has a couple of benefits:
1. It is a lot easier to use, especially when wet feeding since it absorbs into the liquid and feed.
2. I have seen a drastic improvement in skin and hair condition, something that I don't see when using the other products. We spend a lot less time brushing.
3. Also, I think the fat cover that deposits with oil is a harder fat that looks smoother over the muscle and gives a better appearance IMO.

Re: Feeding fat
I agree Moormans Alliance 3D oil is pretty good. However we still prefer moorfat or heavy weight as our fat source.
