New Show mom needs help
Re: New Show mom needs help
She is pretty small for her age. Hopefully you have plenty of time to get her there. One thing to keep in mind is that pigs will generally eat between 3 to 4% of their bodyweight. At this point she is only going to be eating around 1 1/2 lbs of feed a day. When is the show that you are targeting?
Re: New Show mom needs help
We are supposed to be going to Ft. Worth with her January 21st.
Re: New Show mom needs help
What weight are you wanting her to be? If you are thinking 250+ lbs I don't see anyway that she is going to make that. Even if she was the right size for her age she seems too young for a show at that time. She is going to be a bit under 5 months at the show if my math is right. I always figure gilts to be 6 to 6 1/2 months at the show. And then you add that she is small for her age. Pigs that are behind that much that early seldom catch up. It sounds like you are doing everything right on your end but you started with too small of a pig. You shouldn't have to be adding syrup or such things to get them to eat adequately. If Ft. Worth is a market show I don't think you are going to make it. Do you have any other shows you could go to instead in March or even April? In 60 days she is only going to be weighing 150 lbs or so.
Re: New Show mom needs help
we are thinking about doing Rio Grande Valley March 10th. But mostly I just need her to be at least 220 for our county show Feb 24th.
Re: New Show mom needs help
My 1st question is her weight appropriate for her farrowing date. If it is then how much feed should a pig weighing 37 pounds without competition really get in it's belly and not on the ground...3/4-1 pound daily or is that too much to expect. You've washed out the barrel just make sure you rinsed all the cleaning agent residue thoroughly and either get rid of barrel and put pressure system (CITY WATER FEED) or take the guts out of your water nipple. If the weight is age appropriate you should be feeding some pretty hot feed like what, 1.4-1.6 lysine 7.5-8.5 fat? Some starter feed I believe or mighty close to starter. I'm remembering that it's pretty hard to get a feed with enough energy content at that age to really fulfill it's energy need so please pipe in KGB and others on this aspect.
Best of luck.
