Hi all! My daughter is showing a pig for the first time this year with FFA. She is doing well so far, but it's only been a been 10 days since purchase! Lol
I keep seeing comments in threads about adding supplements, milk replacer, or mixing feeds to fill out or build up. How will we ever determine what to use and when?
First time showing, lots of questions!
Re: First time showing, lots of questions!
Welcome to livestock showmanship.
Young or 1st time showman even if that showman is showing for the 1st time at 16-18 yrs old need lots and lots of encouragement and coaxing. But no matter what her age involve her in every step from pen building and prep of pen to water system installation feeder installation etc. Give her the chance to learn how to use tools. Don't always spout out the answer to the question but instead lead her to right decision whether it be how high the waterer should be and all the way to why we can't fudge on the born date even 3 days.
Make it a project with the process being an opportunity to use the pig to teach the exhibitor life long lessons that she will use as tools in later worldly situations in her future chosen field.
Concentrate on showmanship with and eye on competing as she gets older and more interested and experienced. Get an experienced family with similar values as your own that will help you when needed but will give you and your family room to learn with some mistakes along the way.
Best of luck.
