Feed questions?

Post by MightyArrows » Mon Jan 22, 2018 8:01 am

Would love to know what you look for in a feed? Protein? Fat? Lysine? Fiber? Anything in particular that you prefer...

We buy from a local grain mill and use their show pig feed, so I would love to see some of your preferences as far as percents of ingredients and such.

Thanks!

We work work off a couple very general rules of thumb:

1. The protein level decreases as the animal gets bigger
2. Barrows usually put on fat more easily than gilts. This means we add fat sooner on the gilts.

We receive with a 20% P 1.2% L and 3.5% F

Our 18% ration has 1.05% L and 3.75% F

We will also use a Hi Fat 18% that is 1.05% L 7% F

And then we use a Hi Fat 16% that is .9% L 7% F

We usually end up with a blend of the 18% and 16% with our other supplements. We use the guide in the link below. It works for any brand of feed (just follow the nutrient numbers). If you are feeding for multiple shows this will also change the way you feed.

In terms of fiber we almost always use Purina Ultra Full as a supplement.
