Weight gain HELP PLEASE

Post by swinemom » Wed Jan 24, 2018 12:40 pm

Our county fair weigh-in is 51 days and my gilt weighs around 140 lbs. We are hand feeding her 2 x day, 3 lbs per feeding of Sunglo 16% with supplement True Glo CR at both feedings and True Trac at morning feed. She has been wormed regularly and hasn't been sick. Fresh clean water supply. She does not always clean up her feed but eats all of it for the most part. Her ADG has been around 1.6 lbs per day. We need her to be 230 by 3-16-18. She has really good composition and looks great we just need her to gain more. At this rate I am afraid she may not make weight. I would ultimately love her to weigh-in around 260 lbs. But at this point 230 lbs. would be fantastic. Any and all suggestions of how to up her appetite and pack on some weight would be greatly appreciated.

Are you wet feeding? this usually helps with consumption. Also, keep a close eye onhow much she is eating. You want to increase feed when you can.

We use Vita Charge Liquid Boost to help keep appetite up. We feed 12MLs orally through a needless syringe once a day and we've had great success increasing appetite.

I would plan to use paylean in the end. Even on a low dose this helps with gains at the end.

Keep in mind that some of your biggest gains are usually towards the end as your animal is consuming more.

I have been dry feeding, however I am willing to try wet. I am just getting concerned about her making weight. I can also look to see if I can find any Vita Charge in our area.. How long do you give the Vita Charge?

Had gain issues this year with both of my daughter's gilts. Was feeding Sunglo 16% and Vitaferm and added paylean a month prior to the show. I tried Heavy Weight, Showts, S'more fill, Vita charge boost, Dyne, cake mix, syrup, jello, B12 injection. The Vita charge boost helped a little for the 5 days I fed it, but as soon as the bottle was empty, they went back to original amount of feed. Could not get them to eat more than 5-6 lbs a day. I finally picked up a bag of Linder's Slop and added some milk replacer. They increased consumption to 7 -8 lbs a day and both gained between 15 and 20 lbs in a week. I mixed the slop with the 16% feed as the slop is 14 or 14.5% protein. I always wet feed. I was hoping to get these pigs to at least 250 to be competitive - her heavier one hit 261 and won our local show!

What Ratio did you use to mix the Lindners slop in with the 16% feed?

About 50-50. First couple of feedings I added more slop to get them eating and each feeding or every other, added more 16% feed as they were increasing consumption. The slop is supposed to to help with rib shape as well.

Is it possible for our hog to gain 8 pounds by weigh in tomorrow. Someone said Yogurt or cake mix? Any suggestions would be great!
