Suggestions/Questions holding, rib expansion

Post by Brilynnh13 » Mon Jan 29, 2018 11:12 am

We have three pigs that we will be showing at the end of February. Weigh-in is in 25 days. Our maximum weight is 300lbs.

We feed Moormans and currently all three pigs are on 16700.

We have been showing for three years and by no means experts. We have always had to push pigs in the past to make weight so having pigs that may need to be held is new to us and we want to make sure we are doing the best we can.

Pig #1 is 230 lbs - she looks great but could use some rib expansion, she is a long pig.We held her this week but think we are ready to let her go again - her ADG had been 2.63 prior to holding her last week.

Questions on Pig #1 - should we continue to hold her or let her go? Is there anything for rib expansion and gutfill in either scenario of holding her or letting her go that won't make her go over the max weight?

Pig #2 is 230 lbs - he looks great and I can't really find any fault with the way he looks but he is quite "wild". ADG has been 2.2

Questions on Pig #2 - Do pigs naturally slow with their gain 230lbs and up? Should we be holding him or just letting him go? Any recommendations for something to calm him down for show time?

Pig #3 is 198 lbs - she looks good, she's a short pig but looks good. She has some back leg issues which have made us grow her slow and steady in hopes of keeping her sound for show. ADG has been 1.7. Has been on glucosamine (human form at 2000mg per day).

Questions on Pig #3 - Recommendations for gut fill? Any recommendations for back leg issues?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Pig #1: On the ADG given, she should weigh around 295 in 25 days. I like s'more fill for gut fill made by sunglo. I would just continue to feed her as is because you should also lose some weight on the ride over. If you get closer and she is getting close, then you can adjust.
Pig #2: Should weigh 285 with the given ADG given. Could give melatonin, I have heard that it works to calm one down as well as a calming paste.
Pig #3: I would still bring her on slowly and try to limit the amount of stress on her legs. Again I am a fan of s'more fill but there are a lot of products for gut fill.
