Really light weight pigs

Post by Creeksidefarm » Sat Jun 23, 2018 5:48 am

We purchased pigs with the understanding we needed to "push", we went along with it, however, did not realize what we fully signed up for. We were on Lindner feed, as recommended by breeder. We need to gain at least 145lbs in the next 70 days to make weight for fair, if we can get them to gain over 170lbs, they would show better for their size. Recently adjusted to Purina 18% show feed and started to supplement 1lb per day of the Purina Champion Drive to help boost weight. I have been alternating for the last week of feedings of building up to 2lbs of 18% with 1lb of Championship Drive, then once I know bowl is empty, I shift them to different pen with auto feeder with a stock 14% between feedings. They are eating the mix when pulled away from auto feeder, but it takes a few hours.

Thoughts?

High Octane Champion Drive will not increase growth very much. It’s for muscle. High Octane Heavy Weight is the supplement that helps with growth rate.

And, if the pig isn’t eating well you might try Honor Show Chow 909. (17% ground feed).

Would recommend a lower protein (16-17), somewhat higher energy feed (5-6), slopped 2-3 times per day. All they will clean up. Definitely do not leave in front a self feeder - what they don’t eat of the slop after 15-20 min, clean out so they are hungry for the next feeding. Have to train them to want to eat if that makes sense. May also supplement an energy product such as Essential Uni4m or Soft Silk which can increase appetite with a palatable flavor, increase gain with extra calories and increase bloom with a high fat content.
