Getting a gilt to gain weight?

Post by 4H Hogs » Fri Jul 06, 2018 10:48 pm

I have a 224 lb cross bread belted gilt, our weigh in for the fair is July 23rd, and I would like to get her to around 270. She is currently being fed 6 lbs. a day of Purina 809 feed, a VERY small portion of Paylean in the evening, 8 oz. of Power fuel, and a small medicine cups worth of Fresh And Feminine from Sullivan's in the morning. I am also feeding her 6 to 9 eggs a day, some bread, cake batter, and gatorade to make her eat more. She acts hungry at eating time morning and night, but recently she has been eating about half and then going to lay down. I did manage to get her to eat everything tonight by giving a little extra gatorade when she went to lay down. She is on a steady supply of cold water 24/7 from the nipple. If anybody has advice, i could really appreciate it. I am trying to aim for 3 pounds a day, and she was gaining that until recently when she stopped eating all of her food. Again, if anybody has any advice or ideas on how to make her eat more and gain more weight it would be appreciated. Thanks.

6 1/2 lb per day is actually not bad as far as intake. Personally I would stop the cake batter, eggs, and Paylean. If you are feeding Paylean to get her to eat more it’s not going to happen. Every piece of research data I have seen and been apart of shows that Paylean decreases intake not increases.

I know, I know some of you say you seen increases feed image but have you weighed and measured it over any length of time? Seriously, EVERY research Tracy all shows a decrease in feed intake.

I’d also stop the Power Fuel and add Heavy Weight instead.starr at 8 oz per day and in 3/4 days increase to 12 oz per day.

I'd remove the "extras" and focus on base feed consumption if weight gain is your primary goal, versus changing a certain part of the pig's phenotype. Essential Feeds offers two products that promote increased feed consumption. Belly Buffer is a probiotic yeast-based product that promotes gut health which aids in added consumption. Voltage is new product ("appetite paste") loaded with B12 and Amaferm to promote consumption. This product has been very well received at major shows this summer. Both of these products are very effective in aiding with the achievement of your end goal. When trying to achieve this much consumption and gain in a shorter period of time, it is always a good idea to put the pig on a joint supplement such as Essential Feeds Equex as a preventative maintenance for joint issues.

Thanks for the advice. Kgb, Like you said, i was giving the paylean to increase feed intake because I have heard from tons of people on this forum that paylean helps in weight gain. This morning i gave her a cup of the gatorade powder and a cup of the jellow powder along with water and she completely devoured the food. I was thinking about buying the heavy weight, but since you are a nutritionist i will go ahead and take your advice. Thanks

You can use Heavy Weight got in a number of ways. Since it sounds like she eats better when you wet feed you can:
1. Put the weight in water and dissolve (it will stay in solution) and then use that water (it will look like milk) to wet the feed or

2. Mix the Heavy Weight with enough water to make a milk shake like consistency and then add to the feed.

I have heard a lot of people say that Paylean increases intake. I’v also seen and heard a lot of people feeding rolled roast (it is a good idea) but they have no idea why, they just know “everybody else” feeds them. The research data for Paylean is overwhelming: decreases feed intake

Paylean does 3 thins very well:
1. Increase muscle
2. Decrease body fat
3. Increase growth rate

It also decreases feed intake AND improve feed efficiency.
