Pig losing freshness
Pig losing freshness
I have a barow that is looking really good right now but is starting to lose some freshness. I have a jackpot show coming up in about a month and I want to tighten up his muscles a bit to look his best at the show. I am currently feeding 3 pounds of showright 17.5 percent protein to him, 4 ponds of show right depth and demention, and 1.4 pounds of Purina depth charge per day. I was wondering if I should up the protein of his normal feed to a 19 percent to help freshen him up for the jackpot show. I can't feed paylean right now because my county fair is in May. Thank you.
Re: Pig losing freshness
Got a couple of questions. How old is the barrow and what does he weigh. If I had to make a recommendation now I would say you probably need to give him some more base feed. I think you are feeding things that you should look at feeding closer to the end. You want to make sure that you are ready for your Co. Fair. Jackpots are fun and a great way to have your pig evaluated and help you make the chances needed to get to your Co. Fair.
Re: Pig losing freshness
He's getting about double his daily Lysine requirement. May want to lower protein and increase energy which is what mjw's recommendation would do.

Re: Pig losing freshness
He weighs 156 right now. He is 4 months old. Wouldn't decreaseing protein and lysine do the opposite of freshening him up?
Re: Pig losing freshness
He is on the depth and demention because I'm holding him right now. He is on depth charge to add more rib and drop his flank. If i need to change that though let me know
Re: Pig losing freshness
If you are holding then you need to make sure and feed a complete holding ration. There are feeds like Power Fill that have all the nutrients they need in less of a ration. I am sure Lindners has one too. Base feed does not have all the nutrients one needs unless it is fed in a sufficient quantity proportionate to their size. You are loosing freshness because the pig is not getting enough nutrients that are needed for him to grow.
