supplement help

Post by cracklethepiglet » Sat May 18, 2019 7:07 pm

Hi -

I attached a link at the bottom to look at photos of my pig. Any advice on what supplements I should be feeding? What would you say are her strong/weak points on how her body looks? (e.g. What would you change on her if you could, and what do you like about her?)

EXTRA DETAILS:
She is currently on Linders 685, and I just brought her down to eating about 3 lb. per day of it. I did this because she's way too heavy right now. She is eating it all and very hungry when I feed her everyday. Her most recent weight was:
5/15/19 - 200 lb.

I believe she has an ADG of about 1.5 lb., but that was when I was giving her more feed. I kinda have to wait for another weight to come in this weekend, so I'm not sure about her ADG. My fair's weight limit is 280. Weigh-in is July 1.

Thanks!

She looks really good! I think you need to get that belly dropped and add some cover (fat). she is nice through the hams and dropping that belly is going to balance her out. Be careful with pulling back feed like that. That is not very much feed for a 200# pig. You should be feeding about 5-6 lbs a day of total feed.

The nice part is that filler products that drop the belly will help reduce weight gain.

My favorite is Ultra Full and depth charge from Purina.

You could do something like this per feeding:

4oz Depth Charge
8oz Ultra Full
2.25 Lindners 685.

This would slow her down a bit. With the numbers you provided you can do about 1.8lbs gain per day to reach your weight limit.

Nice pig, I would like to see her more level and flexible through the hip and more fluid in her stride. She's on the hard side as well and needs some fat cover. I will be out there on June 2nd and can take a look at her if you like.

Current weight 5/15 = 200 lbs
Max weight 7/1 = 286 lbs (because she will lose weight during transport and you can hold water for a short time before weigh in) There is no weigh back at our fair.

Total gain allowed = 86 lbs

Total days = 47

ADG allowed = 1.83 lbs per day

I would not cut back so aggressively and I would be supplementing for Lysine & fat.

The diet you have her on is deficient in Lysine. A show pig that size has a daily requirement of about 25g of Lysine per day. Feeding 3 lbs of Lindners 685 only provides the following Lysine per day. This diet will decrease muscle volume.

3 lbs x 1.0% x 454 g/lb = 13.62 g of Lysine

I would Feed the following for about 4 weeks:
4.5 lbs a day of 686 Shape & Guts
.5 lbs a day of Rolled Oat Groats

This ration should yield about 1.7 lbs per day gain.

Then increase the feed by .5 lb a day for the remaining time to get her to the max weight. You can hold water the night before weigh in.

Every pig converts and gains differently. Good luck.

Thank you both so much. I actually started weighing the feed yesterday and I realized that I actually was giving her about 9 lb. of feed per day instead of (what I thought) was 3 lb. Although such a big difference in what I thought I was giving her vs. how much I actually was, I was only measuring it by scoops and giving her 3 scoops a day, which I (incorrectly) estimated was 3 lb. or 1 lb. per scoop.

I think she's been knocking a lot of the 9 lb. out of her feeder, so that's why she was able to go through that amount so quickly.

I really appreciate the responses and I'm already starting to feed her the supplements recommended (4 oz. of the Purina depth charge and 8 oz. of ultra full) and also about 4.5 lb. of the Linders 685 per day right now.

Thank you once again! I love the community on here! :)

I have a burk barrow with a heavy front and I’m looking to clean it up a little. He’s getting 5 pounds a day of Linder 672 half n half.

He’s got plenty of shape but I have some fitters 35 laying around for my cattle and just curious on if this will work and how to feed it.

Thank you in advance.

Devon.behmer - To increase muscle and trim some fat, feed 1 to 2 lbs a day of the Fitter 35 plus your show feed. You should post in the Purina Hot Spot forum so you can get answer from the expert Dr Burgoon.
