Pulse feeding paylean

Post by 7lazy77 » Tue Jun 18, 2019 4:57 pm

We have several lighter pigs that are getting around the 150# range & I would like to start them on the pulse feeding with paylean to try to get some more weight on them. As it gets hotter out, their ADG has dropped & I am little worried about them making weight. We have 48 days until weigh in & the minimum is 210#. All pigs are sound & around the 150#, so I would be looking at gaining 60# plus in 48 days. I have searched quite a bit on the forums & not quite sure which amount of paylean to feed to achieve what I am looking for. Some feed paylean 14 days on & 5 days off, while others have fed 9g paylean 14 days on & 14 days off....or....do I do the 4.5g paylean 14 days on & 14 days off? Just a little confused & need a little clarification.

You should have zero issue getting your pigs to weight assuming no major illness.

Most don’t use the paylean at the way you describe. Just add the last two weeks at the rate where you want your pigs to achieve muscle. 4.5 grams will get you there on growth, 9 gram will more likely change muscle pattern. Paylean has a dose response, the longer it is fed the less response it shows unless you continue to increase rate.

All pigs are healthy & sound. Just weighed them again & 2 of the 3 had good gains this past week. They are all eating good, just have the one that is not gaining much. Over the past week, the ADG is only .28, which will not get me where I need to be in 41 days on weigh-in. Pig being fed 2.5# of 19%, 1/2# oat groats & 1/2# barley. She eats it all, but just not gaining.

Are you feeding this ration 2 times a day. If this is a total daily ration I don't think 2.5# of base feed is not enough feed for a pig that size to meet its nutrition requirements. Feeding the barley at oats is taking up space and not really creating weight gain. I would say replace the barley and oats with base feed and feed this ration 2 times a day. There are better feeders on here who may have other better options.

At what weight are you planning on starting the paylean?

That volume of feed is inadequate.

165# pigs should be eating 6# per day.

I am feeding this ration 2x per day. I will pull the barley & oats & increase base feed amount. Thanks!
