Which feed this year?

Post by hogger39 » Sun Jan 05, 2020 9:33 pm

Looking for advice choosing a feed for this year. Have local access to Purina, Sunglo, and Umbarger. Have fed Purina in the past when the feed was pelleted. At that time I didn't know anything about supplements, so didn't feed any, which held back the pigs, but didn't have much success on the feed. Fed Sunglo the past two years. Had great pigs for 2018, but this past summer the feed seemed to be a common problem for those who had light pigs. ( My light pig was born January 22. 233 pounds on August 21 weigh-in) Know people who have fallen in love with Umbarger in the last few years and had great pigs.

A little history to let you know what experiences I have had. Curious what you feed and would recommend. Live south of Green Bay, WI. Here's to hoping for the start of a great year up here!

We use a combo of Sunglo as the base and then Purina and Moorman's supplements. I switched from Moorman's base feed to Sunglo for a couple of reasons. 1. I liked the inclusion of Amaferm in the feed (the main product in Sure Champ and Vita Charge) 2. I liked the higher fat content (5% vs. 3.5% in most non-hi-fat feeds) 2. The price...I didn't feel like there was considerable difference for the extra $5-$7 a bag.

For supplements there is nobody better than Purina...for ease of use, reliability and results. We regularly use Champion Drive, Fitter 35 and 52, Depth Charge and Ultra Full. I do like the Sunglo fat product SUMO better than most. It's slightly more granular than a powder and seems produce the same results and it is less messy. For Paylean I like the Moorman's product (Lean Maximizer)...for whatever reason it seems to cause the least amount of side effects (I've tried Explode and the Purina produxct too.)

Most issues with feed could possibly be blamed on the removal of medications in feed that started in 2018. It was a common problem throughout the industry.

By the way, because we (Purina, Honor Show Chow) have great supplements that work does NOT mean you have to feed them for the HSC Showpig feeds to work. That is ridiculous.

The same guy that designed and formulated the High Octane supplements is the same PhD nutritionist that designed and formulated the HSC Showpig feeds. He didn’t forget what he was doing. By the way his PhD is in Swine Nutrition.

That's good to point out...I know for a fact that there have been plenty of pigs that have won on straight Honor Show Chow or other feeds.

What would you say sets Honor apart from other feeds?

The new feeds launched April 2019 contain several pieces of technology to help the pig’s digestive tract:

Ambitine - supports gut (small intestine) integrity (villi)
TASCO - helps the pig deal with stress (heat stress but not just heat stress)
MCFA - proprietary medium chained fatty acids. The part of coconut oil responsible for appetite spark, skin & hair quality, and support immune function
High Octane Alleviate - supports proper gastric pH (stomach) and supports gastric comfort

Along with being true Showpig feeds that are correctly balanced.
