New to Showing. Need ideas

Post by KSUCody » Fri Feb 14, 2020 7:03 pm

Hello. My son is starting to show and we will be getting our pigs next month. Wanted to know if anybody could help with feed rations. Which feed do you guys like and how much do you feed per serving? Growing up we just left the feeder in the pen the whole time so it’s a new game for us. Thanks for any help.

There are alot of factors to consider. What is the data of your show and weights. How old is your pig and what is the current weight. Call your local feed store and find out what showpig feeds they carry. The 4 popular names are Moormans, Lindners, Purina Honor Show Chow and Sunglo. Pigs with different genetics gain different amounts. You want to let them grow at the beginning and if you have to hold try and hold in the middle, and push at the end. There are a lot of different opinions on what the beginning, middle and end are. I have seen people say the beginning is up to 150lbs, and then the last 30-40 days you want to be able to gain 80-100lbs. There are holding rations that are complete feeds that are fed in small quantities, control growth but also provide the pig with the needed nutrients(mainly lysine) to continue to develop during that middle feeding period. Usually 3lbs of holding ration will yield about 1lb of growth. We have used that to hold weight gain to 54 lbs in 53 days and the pig still looks fresh and healthy.

There can be many difference of opinions. The best thing to do is to pick one and go with it. Dont switch it up in the middle. Find something that will fit what you want the best. I am no expert feeder but get assistance from people who do really well year after year. Also talk to your breeder. They know their genetics better than anyone and know how to feed them.
