Show is March 23rd 2020, Need Advice I’m Fitter 35

Post by KGM1988 » Tue Mar 03, 2020 9:18 pm

Hi all I’m new. New to all of this. Our barrow is 200 pounds right now and he weighs in on March 23rd for show. He has to be 230lbs. I have him on sunglo 18% 6lbs a day and was recommended to use fitter 35 as a top dress to help with muscle.

My question is - will the fitter 35 affect weight gain? I’m more concerned about making weight right now. Condition is secondary. Thanks!

PS - any tips on good gains would be welcome.

It depends upon how much Fitter 35 you feed, and what else you are feeding. Here’s the dilemma; energy (calories) is responsible for every metabolic process. Everything has a caloric cost.

I say that to say to increase growth rate it takes increasing the energy density of the diet. One of the reasons Fitter 35 burns fat is that it is low in energy. So, feeding 1 lb per day along with Showpig feed may reduce daily gain slightly. 2 lbs per day will definite reduce growth rate.

It is more important to make the minimum weight, because no matter how good the pig looks if you don’t make minimum weight it does no good as you won’t be able to show.

But, 30 lb in 17 days calculates to 1.76 lb per day gain. Unless the pig is sick or just a poor doer it should gain 23 lb in 17 days.

If you are just trying to help with muscle and not concerned with body fat then feed Champion Drive instead of Fitter 35. Champion Drive helps build muscle but dies NOT burn fat or dilute the energy density of the diet.

Hi Dr. B,

Does Ultra Full and Depth Charge dilute the energy density of the diet? thanks!

Depth Charge can. But, usually when fed at 1:2 lb per day it doesn’t dilute it very much.

Ultra Full is 4% fat and is designed to keep animals growing and laying down body fat.

I usually use Depth Charge for my holders... if he needs more fat maybe try Fat and Fluffy... I've had a little luck with that. Otherwise I'd just feed him as much as possible I was feeding my pusher last year 15 pounds spread over 4 feedings because she was a bad eater. And she gained about 15-20 pounds in the last three days before the weigh-in. I'm by no means an expert, but hey... never hurts to share your thoughts on these topics.

Depth Charge is not a holding feed. It is a fill creation supplement. It does provide enough nutrients to keep pigs together when fed by itself. It is designed to feed along with Poserfill that is a slowing/holding feed.

Depth Charge merely makes them appear fuller.
