Full gut. Blown out look.

Post by Showtime88 » Wed Sep 09, 2020 10:57 pm

I am new and trying to learn. I have tried almost everything I have read while searching feeding tips for the full gut Especially on show day. Our hogs look like they haven’t eaten at all compared to others at the show.

We have tried depth charge and ultra full. We haven’t had luck with the pigs eating this stuff. In fact some will totally stop eating when we use it. So we tried gut bomb and cruise control. We tried smore Fill. And many others. We know the genetics and rib are there because others with the same breed lines have it great. Somehow they can get the bellies blown out and full. Sadly they won’t teach us and help us learn. They just say “stuff everything to them”.

At the show we increased the fill to a higher ratio in the feed. They don’t have water tubes and we wet feed. Then try giving them all they will drink right before we take them into show.

I feel like we have tried everything and every feed or supplement recommended. At least what is accessible to me or able to shipped at a reasonable price. Mmy pocket book is empty. My kids work extremely hard and are self driven or do well. I don’t have the know how to help them feed to the next level and don’t have anyone close to teach us the best ways to feed as well as the what’s to feed in different situations or different structured hogs. I really appreciate all the help.

For show day fill take five cups of smore fill and a cup of sumo mix those together the night before with water and let it ferment overnight. It smells like hell but they'll eat it.

If you are feeding Depth Charge and Ultra Full at the show or the day before for the first time that is the problem. Those aren’t “magic” products they are nutritional supplements that need time to work.

Some animals (pigs, lambs, goats, and cattle) need time to adjust and begin eating those products well. Some eat them well right away, others take a few days. It takes at least 8 oz per day and 1 lb is better of Depth Charge.

By the way they are not show day fill products. They are designed to create fill ahead of show day... at least 14 days and 28 is better. If you have a pig that needs flank NO product is going to do it and correct that in 1 day.

Usually pigs eat Ultra Full well. However, Depth Charge can be a different story. If you are restrictive feeding (limiting intake) pigs normally consume Depth Charge fairly week. But if you are basically full feeding (giving the pig just about all it can eat) then Depth Charge needs to be added gradually starting with 4 oz per day and increasing by 4 oz about every 4-5 days until you are feeding 12 to 16 oz per day.

Supplements generally fail because folks expect them to work very fast... like magic. It’s not the supplement it’s how we are feeding it.
