"ABC Supplement Formulated to Target XYZ Body Part"

Post by SATX Ag Dad » Sun Jan 31, 2021 6:26 pm

My son and I are somewhat new to raising showpigs, as we raised a "commercial" or "lottery" barrow last year as part of the high school FFA program. This year is my son's (and my) second year in the program, but he enjoyed the experience so much last year that he decided to raise three pigs this year (one being another "commercial", with the other two being purchased from a breeder). He recently participated in his school show where one of his non-commercial crossbred barrows took 4th in it's class. We plan to take this same barrow to a major show later this month. The judge at the school show had high praise for this barrow, but said that he needed just a little more balance, as he was a little too weak down his top.

I've been doing some research on different supplements to address the judge's comments, and have found several products by several different manufacturers that claim their product is "specifically formulated to target the top half / top shape". I've also found other products that make similar claims for other parts of the pig body. For example, and not trying to single out Purina here - hopefully @kgb will weigh-in, High Octane Fitter 35 & 52 are designed to trim belly fat and jowl fat, while promoting additional muscle definition. Sunglo Game On and Lindner Beast both appear to advertise top shape as the primary use. I have no doubt that these products, and all the other unique supplements on the market, are designed to specifically target certain areas of the body. That is not up for debate in my mind. So all that being said, my questions are as follows:

1. What exactly makes a supplement "specifically formulated" to target a specific area of the body? Is is the protein, lysine, fat, & fiber percentage combination? Is it other ingredients besides those four?
2. If most of these supplements are utilized as a topdress and not as an all-in-one feed, then wouldn't the protein, lysine, fat & fiber percentages in the feed play a role in the effectiveness of the "specifically formulated" supplement?

It just seems that the effectiveness of a supplement would either be magnified or diluted depending on the feed contents being fed. Would 8 oz of High Octane Fitter 52 have the same effect if topdressed on 6 lbs of a 16% protein, 1.0% lysine, 6.5% fat, & 3% fiber feed versus a feed that offered 23% protein, 1.5% lysine, 7.0% fat, & 3.5% fiber? And what if you are feeding other "specifically formulated" supplements as well (i.e. Sunglo Game On or Lindner Beast)? Does that also affect the efficacy of each supplement? Just trying to make sense of how this feed/supplement game works.

Long winded and lots of questions I know. Thanks in advance for any responses.

A few answers:

Fitter 35 and Fitter 52 don’t target belly fat. Not sure where that one came from.

Game on is a fat product

It isn’t just protein, fat and fiber content it’s the ingredients that make up the supplement. Otherwise just increasing soybean would result in the same thing. Which is not the case.

Thanks kgb - I was hoping there was more to formulation than just protein, lysine, fat & fiber configurations. Email coming shortly - looking forward to an education.

Apologies regarding the misinterpretation of the Fitter products. Product description says it trims fat - my fault for interpreting that as belly fat.

Thanks again.
