Post by Sheena27 » Sun Feb 14, 2021 11:13 am

Hi, we are new to show pigs. We were told this gilt duroc we got was structurally perfect. Well we just got back from show and it didnt go so well. They kept saying wider. Also I know when they looked at the back end that when they sent us out. What can we do we have 4 weeks to the next big show.

Well, it appears no one has or is going to answer. I'll take a shot at it.

Width comes from 2 things:
Genetics - the skeleton is naturally going to pull or push apart as the pig grows because that is the way it is made. And, in this case if the pig doesn't have width in it's genetics it's not going to have width.

Muscle - developing muscle pulls the skeleton apart so to speak. Again, the pig either has to have the genetic programming to develop muscle and width, or you can try to feed it to develop muscle as it is growing and therefore pulling the skeleton apart.

NOTE: I am the nutritionist for Purina HONOR Show feeds. I formulated the show feeds and High Octane supplements. I also purchased them retail and fed them to my daughters' pigs. Those are the ones I am familiar with and know what to expect, those are the products I recommend.

There is a few ways to attempt to doing this.

1. add 1 to 2 lbs per day High Octane Champion Drive
2. add 1 oz per day High Octane Paylean 900
3. add 1 lb per day High Octane Fitter 52
4. (the way I would do it if it were me) - add 1 lbs per day Fitter 52, 1 oz per day Paylean 900, and 8 - 12 oz per day High Octane Heavy Weight

Heavy Weight is 70 % fat, it will provide calories to fuel muscle synthesis, help with appetite, and prevent the pig from getting too lean.
