Swollen Hock on Show Barrow (HogDoc please help!)

Post by DJFarms » Thu Jun 26, 2014 6:44 pm

We have had this barrow since he has been little, and always been great structured and moves great. Now he is about 200 pounds and he has some swelling just below on his left rear hock it doesn't effect him at all, however I think he discounted in the show ring for it. When I feel it, it is hard, similar to a callas. We have been rubbing DMSO on it, however it has little effect. If anyone could give me tips or tricks to alleviate his swelling it would be awesome! Thank you guys!

Without seeing it I'm guessing but the way you describe it it may well be a callous. I'd make sure you are bedding him well so he isn't laying on dirt sand or concrete and if it is a callous it will go away.

None of these drugs are labeled for swine and therefore illegal to be used without an extra-label prescription from your vet. And nitrofurazone is in a special list of drugs that are illegal for vets to Rx extra-labelly even - a drug that is never to be used in food animals. We need to remember that 4-H projects are still part of the pork production industry and we must follow all regulations to keep our food supply safe!
