Ulcer - Rectal bleed

Post by rbburg1212 » Thu Jun 27, 2019 6:51 am

I recently had a client contact me about a pig vomiting. No biggie I thought. We'll treat him for an ulcer. This was a 185lb, Feb 1 Duroc barrow. I gave them the ulcer protocol off of here that I've used before. Omeprazole, bismuth, B12, oats, BO-SE, pro-biotic. They started this that evening. The next morning he developed rectal bleeding. They called the vet who gave him a few more drugs. They think it was "a steroid" and "an antibiotic." Now a few days post onset of symptoms the barrow has died. He was penned with a cross barrow of the same age. Pen is always kept clean. They were on straw. Fed and walked daily with access to water at all times. He was on 16% with some oats mixed in. I'm just wondering if there is something I'm missing or was this just a case of "livestock adversity?" I know we can't control everything and sometimes things just happen.

Did you ever find out what it might’ve been? We have a 187 pound barrow that had recently started vomiting after eating, but only a couple times. He was fine for weeks and then tonight, he vomited four times, right after eating. We thought maybe he had licked something off the barn floor, seeing that there are some pigeons that tend to roost in the rafters. We slopped his dry food (18%, 14% and oats) to see if he Would slow down from eating...If maybe he just was eating too fast. But ended up throwing that up too. Last week, he did have a tinge of blood in his stool but haven’t seen anything more. Wormed him after seeing that, too. Tonight we took his food away, gave him Pepto-Bismol and a Pepid Ac. My breeder has suggested giving him a Prilosec and some Baytril but now I’m concerned reading your post.

We never found anything concrete. It was assumed to be twisted bowl.
What you're dealing with sounds like an ulcer. I've had luck reading that with the ulcer protocol you'll find online here.
Good luck!
