Is there any help for this pig?

Post by gobigorgohome » Sat Nov 16, 2019 5:39 pm

Been struggling with this gilt for almost a month. She started limping on her left rear. We gave her lincomix and dex for 5 days. We also decreased her feed intake and lowered her protein from 16 to 14%. Slight if any improvement. She is currently on sow feed - 12%, two joint supplements and is confined to a small pen. She seems to be getting stiffer and today her front ankles appear to be giving to the side when she walks. Our show is end of January. Should we throw in the towel on this one? Hopefully the video is viewable.

I hate to say it... but sounds genetic to me... maybe a deformity in her frame... my friends Wedding Night Barrow had a limp in the back leg. Also the buckling in the ankles is definitely a conformation issue... the judge will notice. I would guess the gilt won't place if she doesn't mend. If she is a great gilt in other aspects I would find a vet who knows show pigs... if she isn't the best make her comfy until you can get a butcher. Or you could just keep going and keep your fingers crossed that she will mend.
Sorry I don't have a better answer.
