Scrotal hernia

Post by SPF » Mon May 11, 2020 10:40 am

I’m relatively new to raising hogs. This was her first litter. Her mama is a great breeder and I kept her hoping
She would be too. She had 13, 2 out of the 5 boys have
Hernias. Can I raise them without a problem? It isn’t
Cost effective to have the vet repair them and I don’t know how. I was hoping to get them to 5/6 months and butcher. Anyone had success doing this? Thanks

There are always different levels of scrotal ruptures, some actually never expand and look like normal testicles. Others blow up like balloons.

The minor ones I fix myself as it is a very simple procedure, the bigger ones I will have a vet do the surgery. Every vet is different on pricing for the procedure.

The boars can be fed and processed like any other hog, they just need to be harvested at a lower weight before boar taint Becomes an issue. I know that European countries didn’t castrate males and raised to about 200# Before processing. At least this was common a few years ago, not sure today.

I do wish the vaccine for boar taint would be marketed, at least for this purpose.
