gilts swelling
is it normal for bred gilts to swell in the vulva are from day to day during pregnancy??? it s not like a heat, just appear more swollen than prior to being bred.

EVERY 21 days?? Really? That would be extremely rare. Are you checking with a boar? Does she stand every 21 days? If so, you probably need a new preg. checker.MarkFrankpigs wrote:I have a sow that does a false heat every 21 days, I had to get a preg tester to check if she was bred. Sure is nice to have one around.

no she generally does not stand, in the beging of her pregnesey(wrong spelling) the false heats where very strong. As she went along they became weaker and weaker. She is 6 days away from darrowing, and no doubt is she bred. the vet says she may be cistic?

What behavior is she displaying that leads you to say she is having a false heat? She isn't standing. Is she riding? Growling? Why do you say she has a false heat? Usually a false heat is when the female exhibits all the normal signs of being in estrus (in fact would let a boar mount) even though she is pregnant.
Your vet could be right and she may have a cystic ovary, however, sows with cystic ovaries will not usually conceive or stay pregnant either. Sounds to me like you just have an unusual sow!

Re: gilts swelling
trying to find info and this post was a best match.
We've got a gilt that was bred on the 12-13 of September. Today is day 36. She is extremely swollen, and did something similar about 18 days ago. not just on the volva, but the surrounding area also.
Her heat cycle was off when we bred. She went to 24 days from the last standing heat.
What is a good pregnancy checker?

Re: gilts swelling
MarkFrankPigs, you have a confirmed bred gilt that stood for a boar initially? We have a gilt that stood for a boar (fence line contact) today that I would have sworn we caught and had bred. This is day 19 since breeding - you are giving me hope! Anyone else out there?
