However....it depends on the gilt/sow. I have had littermate gilts, bred at the same time, standing side by side. Three weeks later you knew that one was definitely bred, the other, it was two months or more later, before I was sure. Depends on litter size they are carrying, their body size, shape (short or long), depth of rib, width, etc.
Yeah, I base mine on not having heat cycles but also I look at the underline and for some fullness in the lower flank belly area.
Gilts especially show some fullness around each teat their nipples look more erect because of this fullness. I also look for a slight bulge in the belly back under the flank. Its alot harder on sows to look at the underline but mine I still see that slight bulge in the belly and little increase in fullness in the flank.
Of course I only have a few sows and look at each one closely every day so I do see subtle changes, but if I were running quite a few I doubt I would notice this on each and every one simply because you don't have time to study each one that closely every day.
