NEED HELP RIGHT AWAY - LATE GILT

Post by sboggs » Tue Jan 26, 2010 9:06 am

My daughters gilt was due 1/23 (guaranteed). After reading many posts I gave her 2 cc of Estrumate on 1/25 at 3:30 am. It is now 7:00 am 1/26 and she is still doing nothing. She did get real restless between 12:30 and 2:00 am (up and down, nesting, and grinding her teeth) but then settled down and has been sleeping and relaxing comfortably since. She eats, drinks, pees, and poos (a lot). We don't have any vets with pig knowledge around here. Can or should I maybe give her some leutalyse? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

she will go when she is ready. i know its hard to wait, but just be patient. i have had a lot of sows go 117-120 days before they farrow.

Induced sows typically take 30 hours or more to farrow after the injection, whether it be lutalyse or estrumate. There is no harm done if the shot didn't work. Don't inject her again, at least not this soon. Wait it out.

Something else to consider. Is this due date figured from the first insemination? If you figure that conception can be as much as 12 to 24 hrs after the second insemination could add 36 to as much as 72 hrs to the schedule.

So look back at your time table if you bred this female and just reconsider. But most importantly as Darin said [color=red:4b1174a0a3][/color:4b1174a0a3]BE PATIENT[/size:4b1174a0a3] She will go when she is ready!!!!

Thanks for your advice. When I went back down to the barn after posting this morning she had 3 babies, that was at 7:30. By 9:15 she had two more for a total of 5. She was then very restless and at 2:30 finally had another one and passed a small amount of afterbirth. It is 6:00 now and she has not cleaned or done anymore - has 6 healthy babies. I don't even see her pushing, and she is up and down.

I would have went in her to see if a pig was stuck. I would not have waited that long if she hadn't cleaned out yet. If she is restless and getting up and down she is probably not finished.

I did go in and didn't feel anything. Just checked her and sometime in the last 2 hours she had another one and cleaned a little bit more. We now have 8 strong babies. She did clean more but im thinking I will go in again cuz she is still up and down.

I'm just wondering why its taking so long (we are at 21 hours since first pig was born), and if something like oxytocin would help? We use that on the cows sometimes to help move things along after labor is well on its way. The babies are pretty small so I doubt its a getting stuck problem.

She ate and drank well and that surprised me. In my little bit of exprience they I thought they went off feed for a day or so.

THANK YOU to everyone for their replies - this is a great sight with a lot of experienced people giving good advice.

Yes, 1/2ml of oxytocin will speed things up a bit, but be aware that once you start oxytocin you need to be ready to pull pigs if she does not have any within 15-20 minutes after the shot. Oxytocin generally increases the number of stillborn pigs.

farrowing problems

Post by oldobserver » Wed Jan 27, 2010 10:55 pm

i have experienced some of the same problems you have and it is so frustrating. 21 hours is a long time for farrowing and i am surprsed the last ones were alive. you must be lucky.
since you have been going inside her to examine, you need to give her some pennicillin to fight any possible pathogens.
good luck with the new litter.
