Typical 21 day estrus is from when to when?

Post by TDog78 » Fri Oct 28, 2016 10:07 pm

Hello all, first post here and our first breeding with our new Berks. Long long story short I had a successful AI after our young boar was failing miserably with a young gilt but I got semen in time. Our second gilt came into standing heat two days later and I gave the boar another shot and he locked up twice (finally found the fun spot) but they did not lock long (only about 2.5 minutes each time 12 hours apart) but honestly I thought we were good. Well we are 27 days after that and she is in full on standing heat again..... So my big question is when to figure on getting some semen on hold for the next go round. Is the "typical" 21 day cycle from standing heat (near end) of one to the start of the next (swollen vulva etc but not standing yet) or how my wife and I see it as 21 days from egg drop to egg drop or rather standing to standing. The latter would make more sense but you never know. Second question would be since that was long by most standards do you think she maybe absorbed the pregnancy early on? It was a full 27 days from standing heat to standing heat and nothing in her diet was out of whack and no stressors that we know of. Thanks for any help. T

This is my first year breeding, so not much experience here, but 21 days from start to start. For us it has been whatever day I start seeing signs, 21 days later I will start seeing the same signs for the most part. It can change by a day or so. We had a gilt the for her first two cycles was exactly 21 days signs standing everything to a tee. She was going to be standing on a Friday. So ordered semen to receive on Friday. Wednesday morning I go to feed, she is not interested. I check her and she is standing. So it was a 19 day cycle. Luckily I was able to get semen same day since Friday would be too late. Her signs were also different as a sow compared to when she was a gilt. We have another gilt right we are going to breed. This is her 3rd heat. She should have been standing last night for the 21 day cycle. She is close, but not standing as of this morning. So I would order to have a day before or the day of, not receive a day after she should start. You can order same day as collection (Monday-Thursday), but if you want to ensure the boar you want is available, pre book in advance. Just my thoughts !
No idea why the 27 days. Hopefully some of the knowledgeable people will respond.

Thanks for the input....I caught her perfect timing with some semen that I got ordered in time and both AI sessions went textbook and as of now the breeding took. I think my problem is with my boar

I am just a beginner also, but the probable reason for the 27 day cycle is that there wasn't enough embryos fertilized and implanted. I am not sure about the exact number, but if you don't have 4-5 embryos implanted the pig will absorb them and start her cycle over again. It usually happens around 30 days.

After reading some I completely agree on the "being absorbed" due to low numbers.
