gilt won't come in heat

Post by mict71 » Mon Nov 14, 2016 7:24 pm

I have a 7 month old gitl that is about 300 pounds that will not show me any sign of heat. I have taken her for a trailer ride, and have been spraying her with boar spray every day for a month and nothing works. I know about pg600, but was hoping not to go down that road, because I can not get single dose bottles, and don't want to throw away the rest of the bottle after using her dose. She is in a pen with another younger gilt that is always riding her and she stands for her, but is showing no signs of heat other than that, and that is an everyday occurance. I am looking for any advice I could get for her because my time is running out to get her bred for our county fair. Thankyou for any help I could get

I sure would buy the PG600 and give her a shot vs missing breeding her for your fair. A 5 dose bottle of PG600 is $50. Worth the investment.

I broke down and spent the $35 for the pg600. I gave it to her on sat morning. What I am wondering is how long on average it takes for them to come in heat? It says 3-7 days but will it be closer to 3 or seven? I have ordered some cheap terminal semen already because of thanksgiving just to make sure it is on hand. As of tues morning I still don't see any signs of heat. Was just wondering what to expect because I have never used it before?

Usually day 5-6. Also be advised that it isn't 100% either.

It has ben 7 days since we gave her the pg600. I was wondering if anyone would have any more ideas. it is my daughters pet, and she is very upset when I told her that if she doesn't come in heat soon she will be in the freezer. I have watched like a hawk now for 2 months and nothing. I have no other ideas. Any help would be appreciated. She currently is 8 1/2 months old.

The same thing happened to us. We now have a 370 pound gilt that is a year old and she still won't come into heat. We tried putting her in the neighboring pen with our boar and even in the pen and still nothing.

At my place they get the name 'wheels'. No shame in it, they have to show heat to fit the program. Make great sausage.

Do you have a boar? Many times if there is not boar exposure for heat checking you can easily miss it. Example: knowing better I tried to be cheap and just AI some gilts without owning a boar one time. 1 out of 3 showed great heats with no boar exposure the other 2 took me 2.5 months to get bred after borrowing a boar. They just weren't showing signs of heat. If you can borrow a boar to heat check with and AI to something you like you may have better luck. Or natural service may be a better option

she is going in my freezer shortly. After I gave her the shot she started having arthritis issues that she never showed before. she must have other health issues I don't know about. no, I don't have a boar, but I have never missed any heats before when I am looking for them.
