To induce or wait it out

Post by cah » Tue Jan 31, 2017 3:30 pm

We have two gilts that we bred Oct 6 and 7. So according to our calculations we have farrowing Jan 29 or 30 - neither has farrowed and neither has any signs ! The vulva is not swelled at all . If we induce at this point and they would be starting to go on their own would the lute interfere with the natural timing ? We have raised lots of pigs but have never had to induce . Ours have always gone on due date or a day after . No milk is present please give me some opinions ? There used to be so many people on this forum where did everyone go ( ? Thanks

As mentioned in another post, estrumate is not labeled for swine, so you'd need to consult your vet first.

You can use lutalyse and no it won't interfere with them if they are already starting on their own.

folks sometimes get awful touchy about estrumate. Per our vet's instructions we use 2cc estrumate in the neck 24 hours and 12 hours before the due date starting labor normally 24-30 hours from the 1st shot. we're all grown ups here and estrumate is not an over the counter med, so i would assume that instead of telling someone to consult their vet that they already have if they are using it. if not, that's there problem not yours.

The original poster said NOTHING about using estrumate, so why would I assume they already have it. It was a suggestion of someone else. Which is why I made the comment I did about consulting their vet first before using it. The original post is below for you to look through since it appears you didn't read it before jumping on me for the comment I made.

I am in the same situation. I have a first time gilt that was bred on Oct 11 and Oct 12th. She has bagged up but no milk. I can see and feel the piglets moving inside of her. She has no nesting behavior, no milk can be stripped and there is no fluid discharge yet. She was due on the 2nd or 3rd. Her vulva has swelled up a lot but she just isn't coming in. She doesn't show any signs of labor. She is not pushing or showing any distress at all. Should I induce? My vet does not stock Lut so I would have to use estrumate. If you recommend inducing, what dosage of estrumate should I give? This is only my second litter so I am pretty inexperienced.

Thanks.

We use esturmate with no trouble. Our vet has prescribed it at 1cc. We inject in the neck. Never had any trouble. Usually see pigs in 24-36 hours. Sows on the 24 hour side and gilts more on the 36 hour side. Did have a gilt go 48 hours once. We always induce our gilts on day 112 for a day 113 birth. Good luck!!

Whether you use lut or estrumate, I commonly recommend to clients to ensure that their gilts or even smaller sows farrow by day 116. There is little risk of low-viability pigs at day 116, and more risk of problem farrowings if you wait longer.
