I sold one of my boars to a friend with 2 gilts and 3 sows. He is a year and a half old exotic, crossed to a pure Hampshire. He is taller framed than what we have seen the last few years and has plenty of length. He has been successful in settling one sow and one gilt. His attempts to breed the others has been unsuccessful. The breeder that has him explained that he does not extend all of the time. Last week she was able to catch him at work three times. The sow would back up to him and she would see him ejaculate without extending. The boar is allowed to freely roam with the girls and he stays busy enough with the three open girls. I'm not sure why he was able to settle a couple with no problem extending and now he is.
Any suggestions
Thanks

Re: Boar not consistantly successful breeding
Some boars simply are lazy breeders and not aggressive enough to complete the process. If he was able to successfully settle two that tells you he can but chooses not to extend properly.
It is possible he has an injury but my guess is that is unlikely. Probably needs to move him and find another boar.

Re: Boar not consistantly successful breeding
Thank You for your input. I have been thinking he might be lazy. He is tall enough but seems to be more successful with the smaller sows.
Re: Boar not consistantly successful breeding
Might try separating him from the gilts/sows. I had a boar that if I kept him in the same pen with them would just treat them as another pig in a pen and wouldn't even try to breed, younger boar also. Once I took the gilt/sow away from the pen and out of sight I'd then bring her to his pen when she was ready to be bred. He would jump almost immediately, I would then remove the sow and do this process 3-4 more. Not saying this is the case with him but I wouldn't just write him off without trying something different.
