Long labor

Post by wufpkgrl » Mon Jul 03, 2017 2:58 am

I have a gilt that on 7/1 was at day 117 and I induced her. At 6:00 pm on 7/2 she had a light brown discharge. She has been having discharge ever since and it has changed to a more white color with a little chunks. Starting at 12:30 I tried to check to make sure nothing was blocking and was not able to get past my fingers. I have waited a few hours and tried since and was able to get about midway up my arm which has stressed her a little and felt nothing. She does have a little bit of milk when I squeeze her nipples. When I bred her I did only get one tube of semen in her as she was in heat that morning but not that evening. Is it time to call a vet? I do not want to lose this girl at all.

I have one quick question. How pregnant does she look? There is a possibility that from what you are saying that you might have a pseudo pregnancy. With that they will go through all the motion of labor and have no babies. The only thing you might see is a few brown chuncks. Otherwise, if she is pushing hard you might want to call a vet.

She has not been exhausted from pushing bust since I tried to feel she has had a few big contractions. She looks pregnant to me and while she did get a little milk I never seen it "drop" like I was expecting

the contractions you saw might just be from irritation with you checking all I can say is keep a close eye on her if she seems to get exhausted then I would definitely consider calling the vet since.you checked her.and didn't feel anything if you went halfway up your arm I have a feeling you might be dealing with that pseudo-pregnancy. What happens is enough embryos were fertilized to continue the pregnancy but something caused them to die and the body didn't totally absorb them and made her continue the pregnancy. When you induced her it told her body it was over and she went into what looks like labor pushing what is left out.

I did see a few brown spots when she was discharging but thought it may be the poop from the babies. That could be it.

If that is what it ended up being what I would do is give a little something to prevent infection whatever your vet recommends since you reached inside her and a little extra time before you breed her to heal and she should not have any problems breeding back and this may never happen again. The one I had that did that went on to have many more litters without any problems.
