Gilt breeding information

Post by Pigmom98 » Tue Jul 25, 2017 9:57 pm

This is our first year breeding our gilt. And I have some questions I hope people can help with.
#1 To our knowledge she hasent cycled yet. So would I think use the p600 shot a month before we want to breed her to cycle or the month we want to breed
#2 We only have two gilts ours and another friends. Do we need to use matrix and is there a way to just get the dose we need for the two? We do not have a teaser boar or access to one.
#3 Farrow gold. If I read the information right they should get it six weeks and two weeks before breeding - is there a easy way to obtain this? Or do I need a vet to order?
#4 AI - we are going to try it this way. (No boar) can someone break it down for me time line wise cause I am still unsure of when I would order verus when we do it.
#5 We are still looking at boars but are only breeding for county fair and not looking for the most expensive option. Is there a place that you would recommend that works with new families with only one or two gilts?
Thank you everyone in advance for any information!!

So... you are asking some pretty heavy questions here. There is a ton of info and demonstrations available on the internet and You Tube. I suggest you use that as your #1 tool and also the place where you end up buying semen. I've tried to answer a few of your questions below:

#1 To our knowledge she hasn't cycled yet. So would I think use the p600 shot a month before we want to breed her to cycle or the month we want to breed ---How old is she? If you are in a pinch you can PG and breed, but you should observe at least one normal heat cycle. Make sure to document everything. When she stands (starts and stops and every 12 hours in between).

#2 We only have two gilts ours and another friends. Do we need to use matrix and is there a way to just get the dose we need for the two? We do not have a teaser boar or access to one. --- there is a Boar Scent spray product on the market that mimics a boar being around. It's like $10 for a bottle that will last you a while. Most stud houses sell it or QC supply or Valley Vet. If the other pig has cycled you can PG to try and get them close together. If not PG them at the same time.

#3 Farrow gold. If I read the information right they should get it six weeks and two weeks before breeding - is there a easy way to obtain this? Or do I need a vet to order? -- you can order through Valley Vet or QC supply no prescrip needed.

#4 AI - we are going to try it this way. (No boar) can someone break it down for me time line wise cause I am still unsure of when I would order verus when we do it. --- You need to research online. There are a ton of resources...You Tube, etc. Everything you need to learn. Don't complicate it. Have the heat detection down is the most important part. The actual AI is pretty simple and straight forward. Semen collection and shipping days are usually Monday and Thursday with overnight shipping so you have it the following day. The semen is mixed with an extender that will keep it up to 7 days or so. this will allow you to plan on which day will put you closest to when you'll need it. Once you detect standing heat you will AI at 12 hours after standing, and then 12 hours after that (24 total), and then 12 hours after that (36 total).

#5 We are still looking at boars but are only breeding for county fair and not looking for the most expensive option. Is there a place that you would recommend that works with new families with only one or two gilts? --- Most Boar Studs are very helpful and knowledgeable and willing to help. LVS (Lean Value Sires) has some of the best value, especially in the off season. A really good boar is $50-$60 a dose. You should plan to use 3 doses per pig on your first try. As you get more comfortable you'll be able to go to 2 doses.
Thank you everyone in advance for any information!!

I did forget to mention that I believe PG only works on gilts that haven't cycled or sows that just had a litter. If your gilts have already started cycling then PG won't bring them into it.
