Sow not milking well

Post by Pstarr » Sun Aug 06, 2017 9:15 pm

Have a sow had easy normal no hands on birth three days ago. She was milking well. By day two milk production dropped. Her pigs are consuming over two gallons of replacer daily. Am I missing something? Gave her enema and all seems ok there. Her appetite has declined as well. Any input is appreciated.

I'm having the same issue here as well. Was milking great for the first couple days, but has really dropped off now. We're feeding plenty but she's only eating about half. Bowel movements are good. We have fans on her to help with the heat.

If they are not running a fever or have some sort of infection I would start looking at your feed. Around by me the mycotoxins in the corner are so bad that if you're not feeding a binder with your feed the pigs are literally throwing up. That is just my opinion. It's something for you to look at.

We had the same thing happen in February with a litter. On day 9 the sow was dead. Vet said it was a uterine infection that never displayed any obvious signs. We now give everyone a dose of LA 300 post farrowing. Doesn't matter if we pull a pig or not. We also had a couple go off feed one other time. The mill didn't clean out before they bagged our lactation feed. Ended up with a couple bags of "salt" feed for beef cattle. They didn't like it. Definitely check your feed.
