Purebred Spot piglets have red?

Post by littlejewells » Tue Sep 19, 2017 12:56 pm

We've had 2 litters of purebred spots with red on them. First litter we noticed bit of red. This time around, 10 of 12 piglets have red. A few Are streaked, but most look like wild hogs with more red than white outside of spots. We keep being told that the red "should" fade.
thoughts? Is this normal? Will it fade?

Thanks in advance!

Interesting to hear this. Where did you get your semen from?

We bought her as a sow. We first bred her to a neighbor's spot Boar and then this litter sire is from Hi Point. We've been told the red comes from the sow - which would make sense I suppose having tried 2 boars. 2 or 3 of piglets have red everywhere outside of the spots where it should be white!!

Color is inherited from both parents.

Swine color is very complex genetically especially with the inclusion of Pietrain genetics in almost all pedigreed "purebreds".
