Draminski numbers

Post by Csm2015 » Wed Sep 20, 2017 7:04 am

I am trying to learn how to use this draminski estrus detector and all I have read on this forum has made much more sense to me than the manufacturer instructions so thank you first of all. My question is how long do the numbers normally stay up after bottom number on average. I have a gilt that reads like this 270 250 missed a few days due to work then 390 390 390 380 thanks for any help

Csn2015,

Based on those readings it sounds like your hog is at beginning of slow drop. My sows and gilts generally hit around 400, and then they slowly start creeping down. Usually around day 18 . You start to get around 240 range. Day 19 and 20 the numbers gradually drop below 200. Day 21 you bottom out usually in the 150 range. Keep in mind that every hog has their own cycle which could be longer or shorter than 21 days, and I have noticed differences in all my hogs and their numbers - not breed specific. If she is still in the 380s or above next week - consider that she is 1) Pregnant 2) Stopped cycling.
But from reading your numbers you provided . I would guess she was 270 (Day 17) 250 (Day 18) ??? (Day 19) ??? (DAY 20) 150 RANGE (DAY 21) (Breedable) . ??? (Day 1) 390 (Day 2) 390 (Day 3) . etc.

Not knowing how many days you had between readings or whether you read more than one time a day, it is guess work, so thus why it is important to chart. But your missed days she clearly had her ovulation. Because she was heading back down and then shot back up. Try to breed around the low numbers (thus beginning of obvulation.)

As far as how long the numbers stay up. It varies. The important part is that they continue to drop. Ironically if you have charting you can tell if she is preg earlier than you can with a pregtone, because the numbers stay the same or close to the same. You will not have a drop below 200 - or you shouldn't.

Rway. I need some help with a sow. She is a Berk and I have struggled to get this girl bred. I am giving her/myself one more chance. Last cycle I bred her at 240 then the next day at 300. I missed her. I have been breeding on the spike but since realized I needed to breed when she is low. Do you think I am missing her late? I have bred several sows on the spike and have hit them, but with one dose. So I am thinking I am missing late. I have read several post from mtkmb and he stated he always breeds on the spike but I feel that the s too late? Thoughts

The sows numbers are 270-220-190-240-300-300+. She started swelling on 9/19 and was a 270 this morning she is a 220.

Thank you rway I'm charting all my gilts now so when time to breed in October thru December I will have a better chance and knowledge of the numbers I missed some last breeding by signs and that is why I got the draminski

Delangworthy,

I breed several breeds of hogs and like you some are just hard to tell. Obviously a lot of breeders just cull the hard breeders. This is where a Draminski is handy. For me a berk at 240 is too late for me, plus there may be some confusion to whether it is the down or the up end. I always breed in the 100s
Although I am dealing with one right now that is interested in the teaser boar, and semi-stands until I enter the pen she runs from me. I can't use the Draminski on her because she is crazy. (She broke one once) But she is a perfect example of one that is reacting to boar stimulation but will not breed. I am sure that if I could use the unit on her, she is not at her low end so for now I have doses waiting to be used on her.

Thanks Rway. She was a 220 this evening not interested in boar spray. She is on her way down. I won't have semen until Friday so I hope she hangs in there.

I am still charting my gilts every morning but was wondering if when the numbers start to change if I need to do 2 times a day because I have 2 gilts that seem to be cycling because they have discharge but both of them had it at a higher number. I have seen changes in their numbers as this happens but have not saw as low as others have described and didn't know if I could be missing the low number within that 24 hours I don't check. For instance one gilt starting on the 17th 340,320,330,340,320,320,360 discharge ,310 today. Gilt #2 same start day 390,390,390,380,360,390,340,350 discharge. The first gilt I actually bred by discharge earlier this year and she stuck but had pigs still born a month early just trying to figure this out before breeding season. Thanks for all input

Numbers like that is one of two things - pregnant or not cycling. If not cycling hit them with some PG600 and then you will see numbers drop. As far as discharge. Not sure what you are seeing. But those numbers are not a cycling gilt or sow. '

So you can use pg600 to induce cycling then start charting from there if I understand right and do I need to be checking twice daily on numbers? The discharge is a thick creamy discharge . I have seen it before in some other gilts cycling and my father normally breeds by those signs and does pretty decent I just want to do it to the best not decent

Should be no need to check twice a day. Also make sure you have inserted the Draminski to the cervix edge - so that you are getting the same location for the reading each time. Readings will differ dependent on where the device is placed. I think after PG600 you will notice drops. Be aware that sometimes I get a quick drop in numbers with a quick jump back up before the actual drop towards ovulation when using PG600. My guess is the hormone effects the mucus temporarily before she actually goes in. Usually about 1 or 2 days out after shot of PG600.
