Collecting a boar

Post by apalizay8 » Mon Oct 23, 2017 9:12 am

Was wondering what equipment I would need to collect a boar for either immediate use on sows or to extend.

First you will need a dummy of some sort unless you intend on collecting off sows. You will need a collection cup and collection bags. I recommend the ones that have the filter that tears off after using. Also I would recommend using vinyl gloves, not latex. You will need extender. I only use one beaker for the extender. I use a 2000 ml beaker and use disposable plastic liners inside it for the extender. I believe mine are 10"x14". I weigh my water with a digital scale rather than use the lines especially if you are using the plastic liners. Just get a digital scale that has a setting for ml. You will also need a couple of thermometers. I get most of these things at Reproduction Provisions. I just use my kitchen sink as a water bath. I also use Styrofoam cups that I buy at a local restaurant supply store for pouring the extended semen into in order to pour into the bottles. I do this so that I don't have to worry about making sure beakers are totally disinfected between use. I use as much disposable things as possible. The only thing I have to worry about cleaning between collections are my thermometers. Then you will need the bottles. That is really it for just collecting for your own use for on the farm. You really don't need anything fancy.
