Sow Nutritional Requirements

Post by pigpeople » Wed Dec 06, 2017 12:44 pm

Hi everyone,
Not sure who would have the most information about this, but just trying to learn more. Can someone explain the nutritional needs of a breeding herd? I know most sow feeds are of lower protein (we feed 14.1% with 3.5% fat and .75% lysine). Our herd just seems like they are SO HUNGRY! We feed 2-2.5 lbs. per feeding 2X's a day. I am considering adding to our current feed a "supplement". Basically a pellet of Beet pulp, Alfalfa, timothy, flax seed, canola oil - these are the only ingredients. The total protein content of the supplement would be 12%. Throughout the winter months especially could this pose a problem? These are well conditioned showpigs - none are overweight or obese. Honestly, most look like they could go to a gilt show tomorrow. Any thoughts? Thanks!
