PCV M G2 timing

Post by abelkrista » Thu Mar 21, 2019 9:44 am

The PCV M G2 can be given in a split dose at 3days and again at 3 weeks or all at 3 weeks. Is there good argument to give in the split dose vs 1 dose later in life? The gilt is UTD on all her vaccines and is not around other pigs, the town is also not a high pig population. Just thinking less invasive interaction the better.

On same thought is giving all 200mg of iron (2mg/ml) have higher risk for complications than splitting the cost into 100mgs twice? Is anaphylaxis a high or rate risk with iron?

Thanks in advance

Folks do different ways, but here's what I found in my experience on my farm:

We had mycoplasma brought in on breeders that we acquired. I vaccinated their piglets with the one dose at 3 weeks. However, some of the piglets from the litter showed symptoms of mycoplasma, and I had to treat with antibiotics. On my next litters, I used the spilt dose. This worked out much better for me, and my litters have been fine since using the split dose method. So I would say, if you don't have an issue with mycoplasma on your farm, the one-dose option could work out for you. However, if you know you have mycoplasma, I would recommend the split dose option.

Regarding your iron question, again folks do different things. I've never given any of my piglets a dose of iron. I haven't had any issues related to that. We have a good pig vet in our area, and she echoed that iron shots are not needed.

The reason some like to split the PCV vaccine into two is that they want protection as early as possible in the piglets. Under normal conditions I don’t think this is necessary. The other reason is some feel that by splitting the dose in two that they don’t get as many reactions to the vaccine. I used to get a lot more reactions years ago but I rarely if ever get them now. I just give one dose at 21 days and haven’t had any problems.

Just as another thought, every time you give an injection you risk all the things associated with them...abscess or other infection as a result of puncturing the skin.
