Newborn piglet issue with back legs

Post by Showgirl123 » Wed Jan 15, 2020 12:10 pm

I had a sow deliver 10 pigs two days ago. All were up and around, normal acting piglets at birth. Today, one of them is having issues working his back legs.....it's like he can't get his rear wheels up and under himself, wants to drag them behind him. If I set him up on all fours correctly, he will walk and stay upright for the most part. I know he hasn't been injured by the sow. I had this happen with a couple of piglets this past summer from an entirely unrelated litter. Any ideas? Anything you know of that I can do to help him out?

You can usually fix this. It's called spayed leg. Research online for exact instructions, but what you do is tie the 2 legs together with just enough give to allow some flexibility. This helps get the legs working together when they are standing and walking. We just had one this last litter and within a day he was better and within 2 days, normal.
