exercise questions pre farrowing.

Post by Phoenix-Rising » Fri Mar 27, 2020 9:05 pm

Hey!
I have a gilt due to farrow in 7 weeks 3 days. She is kept in a smaller pen the she is used to (at least since retirement from the show ring) and she is acting a little stir crazy. This isn't normal for her. Some people have suggested letting her loose in one of my pastures to run. But I'm concerned that she might hurt herself in out rugged pastures if allowed to run unattended for a while. I'm currently taking her for brief walks in our smoothest pasture to reduce her stress over the pen and barn change (she has been moved from the show pig barn to my farrowing villa... medium pen and large comfortable barn stall.) She was used to daily 1/2 mile walks at a brisk pace before. Is it safe to continue 5 min grazing/casual walking sessions thru her pregnancy until she loses interest?
Thanks! :D

Exercise is good for them in my opinion. Mine run in a pasture until i put them in a farrowing pen. The exercise helps build up their stamina for farrowing. You dont want fat gilts when they farrow, or their will be problems.
