First time kid breeder

Post by Hogdad22 » Mon Oct 22, 2007 7:52 pm

I am taking my first try at breeding. I just bred my first gilt a Duroc. We brought her home from our county fair where she placed second in her class. She is a Lovechild daughter and we just bred her to Cash from LVS. Wanted to get some opinions on her.

Looks like she could use some more width throughout and some more shape. She looks to have plenty of bone, depth, rib, and cover.

I like her design. The only thing that may be a drawback as a breeding female is that I only see three teats on her left side. Could be the angle of the photo. Good Luck!

Judge told me she needed more width. We are going to see how Cash helps with that. And yes she is spoiled, she likes her cookies.
She is 12 teated, just a bad picture.
Thanks for your thoughts.

If you are serious about making good durocs, I would call John Huinker. He most certainly has boars that will add the needed width to your gilt's offspring. He has some of the best (most successful) red hogs in the showpig world and will not steer you wrong. Might want to consider it for your next mating.

Good luck.

piglets finally

Post by mooner22 » Sun Feb 03, 2008 11:13 pm

My Duroc finally had her litter, 2 days late. It was a good day in that I got 5, 4 boars and 1 gilt. 2 others were born dead They were the biggest. She had a rough go at it, I think. She kept pushing two out at a time. To boars, then 2 more, then a single gilt. The two dead ones were also gilts. I am glad it is over and look forward to raising what I got. They all act good and look good so far.
