Hard Udder

Post by jaimandobes » Thu Nov 08, 2007 10:16 pm

What do most of you have on hand for this? I don't have anything with this problem but want to be sure I have the right meds/remedy ready when I may need it.

Thanks-

I don't have a sow that has a hard udder as of current...but just want to be prepared and learn something if I did have one.

what should you give for the swelling/pain on a hard udder? The hard udders I'm thinking of aren't lumpy but just very firm and are not easy to get milk out of (since she her udder is so tight)causing her piglets to fall back..this being about 1-3 days old normally.

Thanks again!

I would just be careful not to over feed. Those first 3 or 4 days most sows won't need to be fed much or the udder will get hard. We start out feeding them around 4lbs/day and when the udder softens up a little we up the pounds of feed until we feel comfortable full feeding. Some sows can be full fed almost immediately while other sows won't take full feed until 10 days or so.

My gilt was a hard udder, its not lumpy or anything, but the base of the udder and every thing down to about an inch or two above the teat is hard, is this normal??? if not what can I do?? She should be farrowing before long
