PG 600 question

Post by ter » Tue Feb 05, 2008 1:02 pm

I know that if you give a non-cycling gilt this shot then she should come in to heat in 4-6 days. Also, if you give a sow that has just finished nursing then they two will come into heat in a few days. I also know that if you they are already cycling then they wont come into heat in the 4-6 days after the shot. My question is this, someone told me that if you give a cycling gilt this shot 4 to 5 days before she is actually due to cycle that her heat signs will be stronger. Could someone tell me if this is this fact or fable? Thanks.

That has been the case in my experience.

Thanks, reason i'm asking is that I have a gilt that has been known to have a silent heat cycle every so often where she will barely swell if at all. She will still stand, but there is nothing to visually see that she is in heat. If possible, I'd like to be able to make sure that I see a swollen vulva so that I dont miss it somehow. So if she should be coming in anywhere from Feb 13-15 I should give her the shot 4 to 5 days before the 14th. does this sound right?

If there is any doubt as to whether or not she is cycling. And since you said the heats are almost undetectable. I would give a dose of lutylase 5 days before expected cycle and PG 600 on day 4 before cycle. Be careful with these meds, they should not be handled by a woman who is expecting.

I know that she is cycling and usually I am able to catch her, but sometimes, not always, she doesnt show phsyical signs of heat. Last two cycles she did, but the one before that was a bit iffy since there was hardly any swelling. What will the lutylase do if I give it to her? I thought that it makes the uterine lining change and cause abortion or induces labor. How will this help exactly in a case like this? I know that pg 600 causes the growth of follicles so I understand why I'd use that. I vaguely remember darin talking about what you just suggested a while back but forgot as the the reason why or how it works. Thanks again for the help.

Oh, thanks for the warning about using the meds if expecting. I knew about the luty but not the PG good to know since i'm due soon. :)

The University of Kentucky has a publication called "Manipulation of the Estrous Cycle in Swine" that explains how all of the products work. It can be found at: http://www.uky.edu/Ag/AnimalSciences/pubs/asc152.pdf
