my first litters are due starting april 1st. all females were wormed with ivomec and given farrowsure before breeding. what meds should be given during gestation and after farrowing. is it ok to worm them while gestating and after farrowing while still nursing? also what meds do i need to keep on hand while farrowing in case there are problems? i would greatly appreciate it if someone could help with a good annual vacination program for sows as well as one for babies and weanlings.

Hope this helps you out. Everyone does things a little differently and you have to find out what works best for you. I should also point out that this is the vaccination protocol of Dr. Hendrickson ( Stony Creek Veterinary)as well as Dr. Gillepie and Dr. Woods (Renselaer Swine Service) The above mentioned veterinarians are swine specialists and if you have questions regarding vaccinations feel free to give them a call. I am sure they would be more than willing to help you out.

Oxytocin for sure. This will stimulate contractions if the sow gets tired. I also keep penicillin in case of infection. You should also have iodine, to dip the navel cord in to fend off infection.

Chopster,

Rob is correct. One caution on the oxy use, please look back in some older posts regarding the use of oxytocin. There is really good information there. Using it to early in the delivery process can cause still borns. I really don't like to use it until I think the sow/gilt is done delivering and then I only use it to help make sure they are cleaned out good and for milk letdown. I personally think it is a must use but only towards the end.

A big shot of pennicillin is good to give them even on unassisted deliveries (my vet also told me to put some B12 in with the Penn), and with an assisted delivery plan on giving her pennicillin for at least 3 days in a row.

that was my next question kathy, i thought that i had read on one of the posts about a med given to help clean a sow out. is there any particular sign i can look for that will tell me when a sow has finished farrowing?
