AI question

Post by jdt44402003 » Sun Feb 24, 2008 4:16 pm

Bred a sow 28 days ago today. Now she is swelled up like a peach, but its 28 days later and her cycle usually has been a regular 21 days. She's discharging and all, but she has started to look bred and looks even more since these heat signs. Shes eating normal and she is resting fine. Just wondering does anyone have experiences of a false heat with swelling and discharge? Wishful thinking? She stood for 3 different doses on 3 different days.

sounds like she isnt bred usually when i breed one after a long standing period like that i almost always miss her unless u have enough semen to keep hittin her until u get to the end of her standing

Sounds identical to what happened with our gilt. The timing was perfect but the sow had swelling 28 days later when she was always exactly 21 days. The heat was atypical and lasted 4 days longer than all her previous heats. She never seemed to come in to standing heat. A very inexpensive ultrasound at the vet's office confirmed she was not bred.
The interesting part came during the following heat. I was off with a group of boys camping and my wife was checking the gilt. I knew she (the gilt) would be in standing heat soon. The instructions were to check her and if she was in standing heat I would come home 12 hours later and give her the first dose. Due to our inability to communicate the sow ended up getting 1 dose 24 and 1 dose 12 hours pre-standing heat.
The whole purpose of this convoluted story is to say that some gilts ovulate before estrus (standing heat). I'm assuming that's what happened with ours. I would appreciate anyone's incite into this.

I meant to also add that when the gilt was bred 24 and 12 hours pre-standing heat that she took.

Shes not pregnant. Theres no doubt about it. Trouble is i hit her early this time and too late last time. shes a big one and tries to get us so we are a little scared of her. she is warming up to us now so maybe she will do better next time we try. is there any vaccinations we can give before AI'ing? is so what are they? we are new to this and will be breeding three in april. thanks.

You better find someone with experience to help you. All females need to be vaccinated twice with lepto/parvo/ery. Pre breeding. Also would help if you had a boar or at least some boar spray. The timing is hardest on A.I. If you have one that is in standing heat 3/4 days, that in it's self is a problem. Good luck. ps, be sure and breed a gilt 12 hourse after first standing heat and 12 hours later, sows 24 hrs after first standing heat and the 12 hours latere. SGI has a great tutorial on A.I. and heat checking on their website. Good luck.

Here's a link to another swine A.I. information source: http://extension.usu.edu/htm/publicatio ... tegory=189

Breeding sire to daughter is inbreeding. It will concentrate whatever traits are present (good or bad).
