Over Run Semen Quality

Post by AndreB57 » Wed Oct 17, 2018 9:38 am

I am curious about everyones experience with over run semen. For the past two years the semen i have purchased at full price my sows have settled. semen that i have purchased at over run i am about 1 for 5 on pigs gettin bred. Do boar studs dilute down over run semen being it is half priced??

We've had good luck with both booked and over-run semen. It's all shipped on the same day and at the same time. I've always assumed the over-run semen was just that, extra bottle of semen that were not already booked. I've found some boar's semen doesn't last as long as others, but not sure I've seen a decline in semen quality due to over-run. If anything, I would think some studs might look to get a few more bottles out of a boar with more demand than one with less.

I have had terrible luck with overrun Semen also I’m a small breeder this year was know different I used 5 different studs the top 3 were 100 % conception being Top-cut CrossRoads and Shaffer’s next was 50 % being Southern Gold and 0% was SGI

In all honesty, I wouldn't say the "overrun" part of the scenarios is the driving issue. The quality of the overrun is the same as full price. There are a number of variables in place here...the sow, the storage temp, the travel conditions, how soon you're ready use once it arrives, did you order overrun the same day of collection, etc.

I've never had issues with the quality of the semen from overrun. AI isn't 100%. I highly recommend using the deep AI/post cervical method for getting sows stuck. I've seen much more success since converting to this method.

How do you know the Overrun is the same quality as the full price. They could be mixing full price seman then mixing overrun after.
Fact is there are lots of studs sending out junk and they have your money.

I disagree that there are alot of people sending out junk product. They know that if what they are shipping does not settle sows they wont last. I feel that most of the times when people miss it is because of bad timing or because of bad storage practices. With that being said I do think that the semen is mixed a little thinner at key times like when breeding for the first couple of weeks in January but it all is not just the overrun.

Generally believe that there is no difference between regular priced semen and overrun semen. I bred 7 sows this year all with overrun from 3 different studs, and they all took on the first try. Reputable studs know if they didn't semd good semen you would buy again.

its not complicated! boar studs of all sizes need to see champions at all levels out of their boars. if they don't sell good semen they wont sell semen for very long therefore wont see champions. success sells!

Look at the semen containers. Most have heat sealed ends. No boar stud is going to cut open the tubes, dilute the semen even more than it already is, then place it in new tubes. They are not going to put more time, labor, and materials into the product.
